Interlaken attractions

The small town of Interlaken offers a wide range of attractions and activities in both the summer and winter months. Interlaken’s main route is the Höheweg promenade, which connects the more urban centre of Interlaken West with the less populated eastern part of Interlaken. It is one of the best places for souvenir and watch shopping, and there are plenty of cafés, hotels and restaurants. It’s a good place to walk, and many of Interlaken’s attractions are here or nearby.

Starting from near Interlaken East, you can enjoy a pleasant walk along the path that runs alongside the River Aare. On a warm summer day, it’s a nice treat away from the bustling centre of Interlaken. You can also start this walk from the other end, near Interlaken West. If you prefer a longer walk, you can also walk along the banks of the River Aare from Lake Thun to Lake Brienz. A really pleasant, but slightly longer walk from the centre of Interlaken to the Unterseen locks, along the Goldey promenade, past the Bödelibad (open and indoor swimming pools) to the Harder Kulm cable car. Then walk along the river Aare to the railway viaduct at the beginning of Lake Brienzi. You can then walk up the path to Ringgenberg, along the lakeside promenade to Bönigen, or across the river back to Interlaken.

The Harder Kulm is a lookout point with a magnificent view over the city of Interlaken, the lakes of Brienz and Thun and the entire Jungfrau region. At the top you will find a restaurant where you can enjoy drinks and snacks while admiring the magnificent view. There is a 10-minute train ride to the top of the mountain. The valley station is located near Interlaken East train station. For more information about Harder Kulm, visit the following website:  http://www.jungfrau.ch/en/tourism/places-to-visit/

If it’s foggy around Interlaken, it’s probably not worth taking the cable car up to Harder Kulm, as the views will be disappointing.

Interlaken Castle The Interlaken Castle is home to the Interlaken Treaty Organisation and has a beautiful setting with formal gardens at the entrance and a backdrop of mountains in the distance. Most people who visit here like to visit the tin figurine exhibition in the castle. This exhibition displays more than 100,000 tin figures grouped in around 150 scenes from world history. The exhibition is only open in summer, so check the website for details. It is currently open from 16-19 June from 12-6 pm, and from Tuesday to Saturday from 2-5 pm in July and August.

Friendship garden This small garden is located on the Höhewegen, next to the Hotel Interlaken. The Friendship Garden is the first Japanese garden in Switzerland and symbolizes the friendly relations between the cities of Interlaken and Otsu in Japan. The garden was created in 1995 by a landscape gardener from Otsu and is representative of traditional Japanese gardens, with lots of water, flora, koi carp and is very peaceful.

High altitude trail This is Interlaken’s main street, and it runs east of the central square. This street is home to many trendy hotels, restaurants, cafés, local shops and nightclubs. A special highlight is the 150-year-old Victoria Jungfrau Hotel. It’s worth visiting this grand hotel or dining in its open-air restaurant. Around the clock, Höheweg is the place to see most tourists as it is a shopping and entertainment centre. From here you have a beautiful view of the Jungfrau mountain and the hills around the town. From mid-April to October, a train runs between Interlaken and its attractions. It takes 30 minutes and leaves from the station opposite the Victoria-Jungfrau Hotel. Cost: adults CHF 9,00, children (4-12) CHF 4,50, family (2 adults + 1-2 children) CHF 20,00.

Height This meadow is located in the middle of Interlaken, along the Höheweg. It covers an area of about 14 hectares and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It is always full of seasonal flowers and is a popular spot for various sports activities, including a landing site for many paragliders. Höhematte has a theatre, café, historic Augustinian monastery and church, as well as a working clock made of flowers. It was once owned by Augustinian monks but was acquired by hotel owners in Interlaken in the mid-19th century and turned into a park.

Adventure Sports Interlaken is a centre for many sports activities in both summer and winter. One of the most popular activities is paragliding/hang gliding, and people are often seen landing in Höhematte or gliding over the nearby hills. In winter, skiing is very popular and there are many ski resorts near Interlaken to choose from. The best place to find out about the different sports and activities and the companies offering them is the Interlaken Tourist website: http://www.interlaken.ch .

Casino Kursaal The surroundings of the casino and convention centre are stunning, with beautiful gardens, fountains and a magnificent mountain backdrop. It is well worth a visit to see the area. Interlaken is a popular destination for conferences because of its central location and its many hotels. The building itself dates from 1859 and was built on the site of the former Augustinian monastery. Covered bridge This is an alternative route to cross the Aare River. It is a beautiful old covered wooden bridge with a concrete base, offering wonderful views over the river and the surrounding countryside.

Unterseen Unterseen is located on the other side of the river Aare, near Interlaken West railway station. Unterseen has some fine examples of beautiful wooden buildings, which for many people are examples of the “typical” Swiss chalet but are usually only found in the countryside. In this area you can also find farmers who keep animals in their gardens. This area has more of a historical feel than Interlaken and is not touristic. There are quiet and cosy hotels and many restaurants and cafés serving Swiss food. It’s a pleasant place to wander around and take a break from the faster pace of your neighbour.

Town Hall Square Stadthausplatz is located on the left bank of Interlaken, in the area known as Unterseen. It is a pleasant little square that is home to a number of cafés, terraces, restaurants and shops. There is also a tall old chapel made of small stones.

Tourism Museum The Interlaken Museum of Tourism is the place to learn more about the Jungfrau area and how the influx of winter tourists has affected the town over the past 200 years. There are three floors of costumes, carriages and other curiosities. It is located in a restored 17th century building at Obere Gasse 28 in Unterseen and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 17:00 from May to October. The cost is CHF 5 for adults and CHF 2 for children. For more information about the museum, visit the following website: http://www.touristikmuseum.ch (only in German)

Horse-drawn carriage rides The cars are available for hire, so you can travel at your leisure and enjoy a leisurely 30-minute to one-hour tour of Interlaken’s sights. The Interlaken West train station departs from outside the Höheweg station. They cost CHF 40 for 1 or 2 people and CHF 10 for each additional person. Children aged 7 to 16 can join at half price.

Boat trips on the lakes On Lake Thun or Lake Brienzi, you can take a cruise on a motorboat or an elegant, renovated paddle-wheel steamer. Special themed excursions are available, as well as fun evening trips. There are plenty of facilities on board, including excellent dining and banqueting facilities. The ships depart from the boat harbour near Interlaken West train station. You can take a half or full day trip, depending on what you want to see. Lake Thun has many churches, fortresses and farmhouses, as well as five magnificent castles to visit. Lake Brienz has beautiful turquoise-blue waters and many attractions on its shores. It has a wonderful natural environment, with mountains all around and waterfalls cascading into the lake from great heights.
